Sylvanus Farm is now for sale.
While
selling the land was a painful decision to make, we hold out hope
that the right person(s) will be able to purchase it. The farm is
about 47 acres. We have worked the soil using strict organic methods
and it has been certified organic since 2000. The soil is the most
desirable type in the area, the sandy-loam that is made up of the
Cumberland River silt of the region's geological history. The fields
roll gently and most of the farm is tillable land. We have added
tons of organic matter, rock phosphate, and lime.
We planted multiple
orchards and cared for fruit trees that would have yielded fruit
for the first time this year had the early freeze not killed the
blossoms. Apple, pear, cherry trees, a diverse assortment of grapes,
strawberries, raspberries, domestic blackberries, and nut trees remain.
A complex network of fenced gardens and pastures remain in place
for an optimal rotation of crops, hay, and livestock. A stream flows
through pristine woodland on two sides of the property.
An off-grid
solar-powered house sits at the heart of the property, giving it
peaceful, glorious seclusion. The house has one large upstairs bedroom,
an open kitchen/dining/living space partially with a cathedral ceiling.
An attached greenhouse also opens into a basement with a root cellar
and large water storage cistern. State road frontage allows for electricity
to the barn (good for deep freezers). A maintained county road makes
up most of the driveway. There are several additional buildings (a
storage/garden shed, woodshed, rustic cottage, greenhouse, shade-house).
We hope that the CSA
could continue with the transplant of some new farmers. The local
organic farmers in KRAFT (Kentucky Regional Association for Farmer
Training) are ready to welcome new members/collaborators. A wonderful
community and food co-op is already there and waiting for new members.
We are of course looking for anyone who will love the land and appreciate
it. If you know anyone who fits this description, please direct them
to Jeff Vibbert at Century 21 in Burkesville to inquire about purchasing:
212 Courthouse Square, Burkesville, KY 42717 270-864-4357 or toll

the property as well: spaulsonsculpture@gmail.com or paulsons@berea.edu.
